New Technology and Spray-on Solar Panels!

More and more people are making use of energy efficient products; one of the types of technology seeing greater popularity is solar panels. These large glass panels are installed in open areas such as roofs to gain maximum solar exposure and to generate electricity. Ironically, this current technology may become obsolete. A new kind of technology promises a spray-on solar generator with the use of nanotechnology.

 Creating photovoltaic cells that can be used as paint is an extraordinary feat. The team working on this project is hoping to achieve the somewhat impossible task of using nanocrystals. Developers use four inorganic materials: copper, indium, gallium, and selenide. These particles are then dispersed in a solvent to form a unique type of paint that can function like a large photovoltaic cell.

 Limitations

 The existing solar technology is a huge leap from earlier versions; despite that, there are still many limitations to its design. For one, creating a panel from individual photovoltaic cells is a laborious and time- consuming process, which is why the cost of a single panel remains high, despite the reduction of the cost of the material.

 Another drawback is the amount of space needed to get the device in position. Usually, this kind of structure takes up a huge portion of a lawn; in areas where there is very limited space, installation of the panel is completed by a contractor on the roof, which is a costly project as well as the risk of damaging the roofing during the installation process. Positioning each panel for direct exposure to the sun also means that the panels are susceptible to damage from other elements, such as strong wind, hail, snow, and heavy rain.

 Advantages

 The idea of a spray-on solar generator may seem futuristic; however, the technology is already a reality and in the process of refinement. One of the biggest advantages of the nano material is that it can be painted on any type of surface, whether it is plastic, metal or even fabric. Unlike conventional panels, there is no need for extensive modification of the structure where it will be applied.

 Although the material comes in liquid form, it works similarly to conventional solar panels. The paint can be differentiated into three layers. A conductor is at the bottom, while the top collects the charges, and a third layer in the middle separates the top and bottom layer and actually absorbs the light.

 Currently, the challenges that developers are encountering is improving the efficiency of the nano material. Current designs are only achieving three percent efficiency, whereas the goal is ten percent efficiency before going commercial. Other base materials are being tested that have same effect as copper, indium, gallium, and selenide; the requirement is that any such material be abundant in supply in order to further reduce the production costs. Despite these challenges, developers are optimistic that nanotechnology is the next step in solar power development.

 A spray-on solar generator is a promising technological advancement, especially now that many individuals are seeking energy sources that are not generated by fossil fuel. It is unknown exactly when this technology of spray-on solar panel will be available commercially it is something that is definitely worth anticipating in the coming years!

Android mobile application

The various cellular technologies in North America converged around the Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) standard, still analog technology but now based on cellular radios that could reuse the frequency spectrum and were standardized across manufacturers. At this time Europe had no less than nine different analog mobile phone technology standards, one for each major region and country in the continent  Google's Android mobile phone software platform may be the next big opportunity for application software developers.

Google announced the Open Handset Alliance and the Android platform in November of 2007, releasing the first beta version of the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) at the same time. Within a matter of a few months, over 1 million people had downloaded versions of the SDK from Google's website. In the United States, T-Mobile announced the G1 Android mobile phone in October of 2008, and estimates are that several hundred thousand G1s were sold before the end of that year. There are already several competing mobile phone software stacks in the market, so why is there such interest in Android? Android has the potential for removing the barriers to success in the development and sale of a new generation of mobile phone application software.

Echostar Pushes HD DVR Technology

One of the really fascinating things about TV technology these days is the variety of different directions that technological developments can come from. A good example of this can be seen in the technology that TV service providers build into their set top boxes. Echostar, which is the company that markets its services under the name of Dish Network, has especially innovative developments in its equipment- particularly in the real of Digital Video Recorders.

While most other TV service providers have digital video recorders built into some models of their receivers, Echostar uses DVR technology in a number of innovative ways. For example, it uses its DVR technology to supply video on demand options to its subscribers. The video on demand programming is stored on a hidden part of the DVR's hard disk and is updated in the background over the satellite signal so that there are fresh video on demand options for the subscribers to access.

Another interesting innovation is technology that allows users to download video from the hard disk of a DVR to the hard disk of a portable video device. These portable video devices (which Echostar calls PocketDishes) can then display that video on their built in screens. Since the PocketDish is battery powered and self contained, it lets Echostar subscribers watch TV in a lot more locations and under a wider variety of conditions than they would otherwise be able to.

Echostar's latest innovation is a digital video recorder receiver that's truly designed for HDTV. The earlier model that could record HDTV, the ViP 622 DVR, could record only thirty to thirty five hours of HDTV content. This new models, which Echostar calls, the ViP 722 HD DVR can store up to fifty hours of programming in HDTV. That's much more in line with people's expectations of what a DVR should be able to do and more in line with the number of channels that offer high def programming. The ViP 722 HD DVR also has an impressive capacity for recording standard definition programming as well. While its predecessor could record up to two hundred hours of standard def TV, this model can record up to three hundred and fifty hours of SDTV program content! This model also makes about a hundred hours of Video On Demand content available as well, though it's unclear at this point if any of that content is in HDTV.

One thing that this receiver from Echostar does address that's been a shortcoming for other DVR's is the fact that the built in hard disk limits the device's recording capacity. While recording capacity of many DVR's can be expanded by replacing their hard disks, that's not a very convenient alternative. Echostar's new technology addresses this problem by offering detachable hard disks that can be connected and disconnected to the DVR easily using a USB cable. These external drives are much more convenient than upgrades because they have plug and play compatibility with the DVR's and they make recorded TV programming portable. All of this makes for a lot more convenience built into this newer model.

This new HD DVR receiver from Echostar proves that innovative technology doesn't have to come from companies that just do electronics.
